Nailsea School

Nailsea lies eight miles southwest of Bristol, in the Unitary Authority of North Somerset and has many features of a developing town.: sports and leisure centres, a shopping precinct, supermarkets, a library and health centres. There is excellent access by motorway, other roads and rail services. Nailsea School was opened in 1959 with just over 90 students. In 1966 the school became a Secondary Comprehensive, catering for students from 11 to 18 years.

The current school population is more than 1350, with a planned admission number of 240 students per year. It is a thriving school serving the community of Nailsea and its surrounding areas.

IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME

During the winter of 2003/2004 a substantial programme to improve the Nailsea School buildings commenced. This has meant that both students and staff have had to be very patient while rooms were out of use. By Easter of 2004 the work on the main building and entrance area was completed, giving the school a much more welcoming facade.

LEARNING

The school has a ten-day timetable. This means that a student timetable in week ONE is different from that in week TWO. This is the present Year 7 curriculum;

As students move through the school their curriculum changes. For example, in Year 8, the curriculum will be largely the same as in Year 7, except Geography, History and RE are taught as separate subjects, and ICT is not taught separately. In Year 9 able or motivated foreign language students are offered the opportunity to take up Spanish. In Years 10 and 11 students follow subjects that lead to GCSE qualifications. For students who wish to continue their education from the age of 16, a variety of courses are available leading to AS qualifications at the end of Year 12 and A2 qualifications at the end of Year 13 (6th Form)
