Pécs is the fifth largest city in Hungary in terms of population. It is the capital city of Baranya country. Pécs is also a gateway to Croatia, the Balkans and Northern Italy.

 

 

History of our town

 

Pécs has a colorful past.When the Romans ruled southern Europe, Pécs was named Sopianae. The town has a lot of relics. King Lajos established the first Hungarian university in Pécs in 1367. Janus Pannonios University /now called Scientific University of Pécs/ is officially recognized as the third oldest institution of higher education in Europe. The one of the biggest tragic period in our history is the Turkish invasion. Our town has got many Turkish buildings and ruins, for example the Saint Bertalan Cathedral and a bath  of a pasha. This domination ushered nearly 150 years.

 

Now days we can see our town's Early Christian cemetery from the 4th century, this ruin is in the World Heritage.

 

Nature

 

Pécs is near a mountain called Mecsek, which consist of limestone. The highest top is called Zengő /628 metres/. The town has got a colorful climate. It has got a continental climate with mediterranean effects. The early springs, sunny summers, long warm autums and mild winters provide conditions favorable for the unique flora and fauna quite unlike that the other religions of the country. 

 

Traditional crafts, world-famous products

 

The name Zsolnay, which stands for the great achievements of a family and its factory since 1853, is closely connected to Pécs in the public mind both nationally and intenationally. The factory exports its mafous products throughout the world: ornamental ceramics, dishware and ceramic insulation for the electric industry. The products of leather and glove manufacturing boast centuries of tradition.

 

 

University of Pécs


The history of Hungarian higher education began in 1367 in Pécs with the famous event when our king, Louis the Great, established a university here.

 

Faculty of Law

Since the foundation of the university in 1367, the most remarkable component of higher education has been the training of law students. Between 1785-1802 law courses were given at the Royal Academy.


After 1950 the continuity of the university was maintained by this faculty whose professors have since trained thousands of lawyers.The school takes regular and correspondes students and the duration of the training is 10 semesters.


A more dynamic development was made possible in 1992 by the financial support from the World Bank, allowing study tours abroad and the invitation of visiting professors.Interest is learning English has increased and number of courses given in foreign languages is also getting higher.

Faculty of Sciences

Courses in sciences were offered by the Teacher Training College, the predecessor of the present Faculty, as early as 1948. When the College was transformed into the Faculty of Teacher Training in 1982, science courses were also brought up to university level. The present Faculty of Sciences was established on January 1, 1992.
Students have possibility to take up courses simultaneously at the Faculty of Humanities as well.
