The environment and well being

Mental well being

prepared by the Danish Young Minds

1. After the meeting in Copenhagen, where we decided that MENTAL WELL BEING should be the headline for our work, I presented the class to Maslow's Pyramid of psychological need:

Our focus was the Body and Security (physical needs). These must be fulfilled to give you mental well being. Health and environmental issues are related to the fulfilment of these needs.

2. The students found different issues related to the pyramid and wrote their contributions to the discussion forum on the following issues:

Love and friends
Fatness
Breakfast
Mobbing
Alcohol
Asthma

3. Then we followed the discussion, collected new ideas and made a new brainstorm: What are the most interesting issues from the discussion forum? We had a discussion in the class and here is what we ended up with:

Smoking/cigarettes
Air pollution (traffic, cancer, asthma)
Depression/suicide
Anorexia
Fatness
Alcohol

4. When we meet in school after the Easter Holliday I will present the students to this description and focusing of our theme: Air pollution

The Slovenian and the Irish Young Minders are also working with this topic and we hope to have nice collaboration with them.

We have now decided go on with outdoor airpollution. Click HERE to see what have the Slovenian Young Minds team found out in relation to this question.

Lately in Denmark there have been discussions about particles from diesel cars. People get sick, and someone die. It is not mental well being, when you are in risk to get sick when you get around in your city.

The Danish fishermen are not allowed to fish salmons in The Baltic Sea any more, because there is too much dioxin in the salmons. It is not mental well being, when you worry about the foods quality.

Even if we know that we have to be aware of global warming, it seems that it is still getting warmer. It might not be so bad in Europe, but you can never know, and besides we have to be responsible, because we live in the rich part of the world.
