How to use the Young Minds website

- Learning by trying, reading and trying again - or in the end asking!

The course is a basic course, made in a ’do this and do that-structure’.

The CMS-system

The CMS-system is made partly as a traditional Content Management System, meaning, that we have decided some of the layout and you (the users), decide the rest.

The reason for doing that, is that the short project period taken into consideration, we find it essential that you do not to waste too much time considering these issues.

The system is a very advanced and capable system but you will probably not use it to its limits. Therefore the course takes off in a basic use of the system, but if you feel that you need any special features just write me, and I’ll tell you if it has already been made, if it will be made and how it works.

My suggestion is that we create a forum for this purpose under the mainmenu point ‘Advice’.

The system works in basically two different ways

  1. You can insert items such as text, pictures, tables, diagrams, links etc. by clicking the orange 'Insert arrow' in the right hand side of the screen. Lets call this the 'object-oriented' way of working.
  2. You can also insert text, pictures, tables and links in the text-editor. This way of working seems more natural to some. Here you move things around the page by clicking, dragging and dropping.

Copy / paste

You can copy and paste text and pictures into the editors of this system but we do not recommend that you do so.

There are two reasons for that:

  1. When you copy text directly into the system it contains a lot of different information which in some cases will make it impossible for you to e.g. format the text, add colour to the text, adjust the text and so on.
  2. If you copy pictures via the clipboard, e.g. from the Internet, from a picture editor or any other program, the insertion of the picture in 'our' editor will result in page in which you can view the picture while in the editor. When you 'Insert' the page (publish it to the Internet) the result is that there will be no picture.

Ref. 1 Text

We therefore recommend that you either insert text directly into the texteditor of our system or that you copy and paste text via Notepad. This will solve the problems. Read more about it under the menupoint Text.

Ref. 2 Pictures

If you want to use pictures from e.g. your schools homepage, copy and save the picture into a folder on you hard drive and insert the picture (in the proper size) in the text where you want it (as described in the course under Pictures.

An essential button

When you edit the webpages and publish them, you sometimes won't be able to see the changes in the page.

The reason is that many computer have been set to 'cache' (save a copy of visited webpages in the computer's memory) the pages. Therefore you should click the 'Refresh' button quit often, to make sure that you see the last version of the page. It looks like this:

Some Danish words

Some of the pictures you will see in this course contain some Danish words. Please disregard this. When you see the same dialogue boxes on your computer they will be in your operating system's language.

Be a good sport!

It is essential for the whole process that you behave as good tutors for your peers. If you find a genius way of doing something, please share it with them and us.

Have fun!

Leif
