Young Minds 2002

Basic information you may need to know before you start the course

This introduction deals with

The site

The name of the site is www.young-minds.net, but you know that, because otherwise you proably wouldn't have been visiting this page.

When you enter the page it will look something like this:

From here you can surf the whole site. There will be areas that are closed to people not participating in the project, but if you are a member of the Young Minds-team you have received a user-ID to log you in.

Click the log in button at the bottom of the start page. Enter the ID and the password (which you have chosen yourself). This will bring you into what we call editor modus. Now you can create and revise the pages and facilities that you are responsible for.

Important information

At the bottom of all pages you will see some information

This information tells us

  • who did the last revision of the page
  • who the webmaster is
  • when the last revision was made
  • the address of the page.

All of them are valuable information to have if there is something one wants to comment on, and if the pages do not fit within the 'rules' for good behaviour on the web.

Main menu

At the top of the page you have the Main menu. It contains 6 main menupoints:

  1. Introduction
  2. Content
  3. Participants
  4. Discussions
  5. Highlights

Sub menu

These main menupoints are divided into several sub menupoints and sub-sub menupoints. These will appear in the frame to the left.

Functions menu

In the frame to the right you can search the site, view a site map and print out any page in a print friendly version.

'Error messages'

You may experience different 'error messages'. They do not necessarilly indicate that an error has occurred, but rather that you should pay some extra attention to something.

ÍÎ

If you fore instance attempt to edit a page, which someone else is working on at the same time, you will see this dialogue box:

The dialogue tells you that Kamma Rasmussen maybe is working on the same page right now. On the other hand the message could also indicate that she forgot to log out when she was editing the page.

ÍÎ

If you try to insert text or pictures from other websites or other applications (by copy/paste) you will see this dialogue box, which tells you that you might be able to see the page correct, but other people will not. The reason is that when you use this method, the text or picture is placed on your own computer and not on the server:

Various functions and possibilities

Some explanations around 'Editor modus'

Let me explain some of the functionality and menus in the system when you are in editor modus. The system is a WYSIAWYG-system. WYSIAWYG stand for What You See Is Almost What You Get. This means that when you are in the editor modus you can almost trust that the pages will look almost the same on the web.

Basically there are 2 menus in this modus, and the functions you need right now are explained further on in the course.

The Functions menu

The Insert menu

As you can see, the system is a very complex system, but don't let that scare you. The functions you need the most a very simple to use. You can try out some of the more spicy functions and the just delete them if you don't like what you see.

There are a few more possibilities for influencing the layout of a page; the green buttons in the top right hand side of the page:

Change user information

Click this icon to enter the dialogue-box with user-information.

Access control

In this dialogue-box you can (having the right permission level) change who can access the page, who the owner is etc.

Edit layout for this page

This gives you the chance to change the overall layout for this particular page.

Without pictures

Preview the page

Click on this button to see how the page looks on the web. This vil log you out but it is easy to log in again. You don't need your password again. Just click the pencil in the upper right hand side of the page.

Help for this page

No help has been made for the site. It may come later on.
